SMI and LGU Malungon Celebrate 14 years of Strong Partnership
Tampakan, South Cotabato - For more than a decade, Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) has partnered with the municipal government of Malungon in Sarangani province to advance the socio-economic development and raise the living standards of its host municipality.
On July 13, 2023, SMI and MLGU Malungon celebrated their 14th year of close partnership that has made meaningful contribution in uplifting the lives of the community through sustainable livelihood programs, humanitarian projects, various environmental protection activities, and capacity-building programs for Indigenous Cultural Communities in the area.
This year's celebration culminated with the handover of a brand-new bamboo boring machine worth PhP 220,000 to be utilized by the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office in their homegrown bamboo dike technology to prevent soil erosion in riverbanks.
In her message, Malungon Mayor Maria Theresa Constantino expressed gratitude to the mining firm for helping her municipal government.
"We started the Partnership Day during the time of Mayor Bongbong Constantino, in 2009 nang pumasok ang SMI. Sagittarius Mines, Inc. thank you for our partnership. Sa lahat ng ibinigay niyong tulong, mula sa bigas, gatas, lahat ng tulong ninyo sa pagtaguyod sa kalusugan ng aming mga kabataan, apart from our programs in education and COD programs. Maraming, maraming salamat, SMI!", the mayor said.
SMI is the holder of a Financial or Technical Assistance Agreement with the Philippine Government to explore, develop and operate the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project, one of the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits in the world.
As part of its social responsibility, SMI has granted millions worth of financial grants and built humanitarian projects to its Tampakan Project's host municipalities and neighboring communities that directly benefited thousands of residents.
It also helped indigenous families to uplift their living conditions by sending their children to schools. To date, through its scholarship program, the SMI has already produced more than 700 professionals, where most of them are now teachers, community leaders, government employees, and public servants.
