Sustainable Planet: SMI holds community and river cleanup on Earth Day
Tampakan, South Cotabato - Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) on Monday, April 22, 2024, conducted river and community clean-up drive as its contribution towards the global celebration of World Earth Day.
The theme of this year’s Earth Day celebration, Planet vs Plastic, “calls to advocate for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics, rapidly phase out all single use plastics, urgently push for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demand an end to fast fashion, and build a plastic-free planet for generations to come.”
For this purpose, SMI employees and staff collected 15 sacks of plastic trash composed of empty water bottles, heaps of sachets, cigarette butts, and diapers during the clean-up drive conducted along Altayan River and at Sitio Gumamela in Barangay Pulabato, Tampakan, South Cotabato.
The activity was held in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Environmental Management Bureau Regional Office No. XII and the Local Governments of Tampakan and Barangay Pulabato.
As one of the host municipalities of the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project, SMI partners with the local governments in conducting programs and activities aimed at the protection of the environment and improving the living conditions of mining communities.
SMI has been cited by the DENR for its sustained commitment to the protection of the environment through its environmental management practices and enhanced biodiversity conservation programs.
With all major approvals and permits from the national government secured, SMI is ready to start construction this year and produce its first copper concentrate in mid-2027. (30)
