To commemorate World Environment Day on 5 June 2020, SMI employees planted over 500 seedlings of narra, guyabano, mahogany, and white lauan trees at its Mindanao Administration Office area in Barangay Silway 7, Polomolok, and in Barangay Lambayong, Tampakan, both in South Cotabato. The employees conducted the tree-planting activity to ensure that the future is sustained while complying with the limitations imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the physical distancing requirements of the new normal.
Since 2005, SMI’s reforestation program has resulted to the planting/donation of approximately 1.2 million seedlings of quality, endemic and high-value fruit, hardwood and indigenous trees in over 1,100 hectares within the Tampakan Project area.
World Environment Day is the most renowned day for environmental action. It has been celebrated every year on 5 June since 1974, and engages governments, businesses, celebrities, and citizens to focus their efforts on a pressing environmental issue. World Environment Day 2020 calls for urgent action to protect biodiversity.
The month of June is also celebrated as Environment Month in the Philippines by virtue of Proclamation No. 237.
