SMI’s partnership with our host communities has come a long way. As a responsible partner in community development, SMI has invested PhP1.2 billion to support the development initiatives of the local government units, tribal communities, and other partners in the public and private sectors.

These programs have transformed into beautiful stories over the years - real stories of real people who have experienced real change in their lives.
More of these inspiring stories will be featured in the maiden issue of Panag-
uban, the annual community development magazine published by SMI, that is soon to be released this August.

Before my involvement in the Hog Raising Project of the Malungon Council of Women, I was a homemaker and did not have an income. I was mostly at home, taking care of my children while also spending time with the Rural Improvement Club (RIC). I was the President of the RIC Consolacion Chapter.

Because of my active involvement in the RIC, the Council saw my potential. In 2011, I was chosen to become one of the beneficiaries of the hog raising project.  We were provided with hogs and feeds. The Council also helped us sustain the project through training and exposure to commercial piggeries to enhance our capacity in hog raising.

The project changed my life as a homemaker. I have been earning from hog raising for years now. During the holiday season last year, for example, I was able to sell 13 piglets for P41,000.00. My income helps me send my children to school and provide for their tuition fees allowances. I was also able to fund minor home improvement projects and repairs.

The Hog Raising Project empowered me as a woman.  Housewives like me can actually help earn for the family if we spend our free time in beneficial activities.

Alma Toledo Peñol was President of the Rural Improvement Club-Consolacion Chapter. She also served as the Monitoring Officer of the Malungon Council of Women’s Hog Raising Project. She is currently the Farm Manager of Pacquiao Farms in Malungon, Sarangani.
