SMI supports MGB-led seminar on responsible mining for Science teachers

Sagittarius Mines, Inc. supported the seminar for responsible mining conducted for public school teachers by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Region Office XII and the SOCCSKSARGEN Responsible Miners Association (SRMA).

A total of 62 science teachers from Sarangani and South Cotabato attended the seminar entitled “Fundamentals of Responsible Mineral Development,” on May 29, 2018 at Family Country Hotel in General Santos City. It was the second in the series of seminars conducted by MGB XII and SRMA as part of a regional unified Information, Education and Communications campaign to promote awareness and understanding of responsible mining and correct the misinformation about the industry.

Talking to the participants, MGB XII OIC Regional Director Efren Carido acknowledged that mining is generally misjudged. He explained that the industry only responds to the needs of the society.  He emphasized that, in order for mankind to enjoy the necessities and comforts it now has, mining companies have to mine the minerals and materials from the earth.

Among the topics discussed by the MGB geologists and mining engineers were the Importance of Minerals in Daily Life, Basics on Geology particularly mineral deposits and mineralization, Mineral Potential of Region XII, Basic Mining and Metallurgy, and Myths and Facts about Mining. To update the participants of the government’s policy directions, MGB also presented updates on the Philippine Mining Industry and the salient features of the new mining law.

SMI Superintendent Rolando S. Doria also presented updates on the Tampakan Project and clarified that, contrary to what the teachers may have been hearing, SMI is not yet operating. He talked about how SMI is living up to the challenge of responsible mining, and the company’s contributions for the welfare of the communities and the environment through its Sustainable Development programs, projects, and activities.

The teachers appreciated the activity for being very informative. Those handling Earth Science subjects said that they are now more confident to talk about mining in class.  They suggested that MGB continue to reach out to other sectors to address the widespread misinformation about mining.
