Environmental Impact Assessment
The Tampakan Project is one of the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits in South East Asia and has the potential to significantly enhance the economic and social development of the Philippines and Mindanao, and to significantly improve the quality of life of communities in the region.
SMI is committed to advancing the Tampakan Project in line with leading environmental and industry best practices and in partnership with our stakeholders. In June 2009, SMI confirmed that it would conduct a USD74 million Feasibility Study and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project. These specialist activities will include studies in key areas such as soil and land use, ground and surface water, terrestrial and fresh water biology, site rehabilitation, public health, and social and economic impacts.
In November 2009, SMI will undertake a series of public consultation meetings regarding the proposed mine plan as part of the EIA process. The feedback the company receives from its stakeholders, together with the results of specialist studies, will be incorporated into our project designs and planning.
We expect to complete the Feasibility Study in the second quarter of 2010 and to finalize the environmental and social impact specialist studies and stakeholder engagement activities for the EIA in the last quarter of 2010.
Subject to the completion of a positive final feasibility study and all necessary community, government and company approvals, SMI estimates production may start by 2016 of what could be the biggest mine in the Philippines, and one of the top copper producers in the world.
