Preserving tradition and culture

SMI is committed to transparent and honest stakeholder engagement, and we respect the cultural heritage, traditions and norms of our host communities. We have also established an appropriate community grievance mechanism to protect these rights.

As part of our induction process, all employees undergo cultural induction training to understand and appreciate Blaan culture and history. This process aims to promote clear communication and encourage cultural trust and respect.

In 2012, SMI conducted a detailed cultural heritage study to identify a cultural baseline for Blaan communities and develop an impact management plan. This study was completed in 2013, with the results presented to the Blaan communities during the Free and Prior Informed Consent (FPIC) process.

Before the Tampakan Project can proceed, we must attain consent from the Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs) within the Project area through the FPIC process. The ICCs’ consent is a key social approval. SMI will closely coordinate with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) to ensure that the FPIC process is properly managed in accordance with NCIP requirements.
