Community Relations

We recognise that stakeholder engagement is critical to understanding key regional issues and that open and honest communication regarding our activities is fundamental to maintaining our social licence to operate.
SMI has been an active corporate citizen, contributing to the region through:

  • infrastructure provision;
  • capacity building initiatives for local communities and governments;
  • livelihood projects to develop sustainable communities;
  • partnerships with local governments to improve education and health services;
  • support for indigenous land claims and local government growth plans;
  • participation in community and business organisations and committees; and
  • sponsorship of community activities.

We also maintain ongoing dialogue with a broad range of stakeholders and seek to integrate, where possible, their feedback into our business planning and strategy development. We consult extensively with all levels of government, local communities, non-government organisations groups and other key stakeholders including:

  • SMI personnel;
  • B’laan communities (Folubato, Danlag, S’bangken, Salnaong, Bong Mal);
  • Visayan communities;
  • Local Government Units (LGUs);
  • Legislative bodies (local and national);
  • Religious organisations (local and national);
  • NGOs (local, national and international)
  • Universities;
  • Industry, business and civic sector organisations (local and national);
  • National government agencies;
  • Media (local and national);
  • Diplomatic missions and multilateral donors; and
  • Project investors (national and international).

Our Community Relations Team is responsible for the project’s ongoing liaison and consultation with the community and other local stakeholders. They are based at Tampakan where we have an office which is open to the community.
