SMI is committed to the highest standards of environmental management and performance. Our management practices proactively prevent risks and we have a comprehensive monitoring program in place to regularly assess and record the project’s environmental performance.
In line with Xstrata’s Sustainable Development Policy, we operate to industry-leading environmental standards. Our management systems are also aligned with Xstrata’s Business Principles against which we regularly test our performance.
We are proud of our record in environmental management, having never recorded a serious environmental incident nor received any penalties or fines. However, if an environmental incident was to occur we have a strict management system which guides our decision-making to determine the cause, and take steps to prevent its reoccurrence.
We have a strong track-record as a company that works in a responsible and ethical manner. In fact our commitment to responsible environmental management in the Philippines has been recognized by the Philippine Mine Safety and Environment Association (PMSEA) with the following awards:

SMI continues to invest in environmental enhancement programs including our award winning reforestation program.Since 2005 we have planted or donated 600,000 seedlings within the region.
In addition, we maintain two large-scale tree nurseries located in Tampakan, South Cotabato and in Kiblawan, Davao del Sur, and provide training tocommunity members to support SMI’s requirement for its reforestation and buffer zone development program. | |
